chijmes
this historic building complex was originally a catholic convent and its quarters. the complex also has a gothic style chapel which is now a multi-purpose hall and is a national monument. the complex has been restored for commerical purposes as a dining, shopping and entertainment centre with ethnic restaurants, shops and a function hall, providing a backdrop for musicals, recitals, theatrical performances and weddings.
on our last night in singapore, my mom and i wanted to eat somewhere special and chijmes was very near our hotel. kaso nga lang, medyo mahal, and there were a lot of people drinking, haha, so we ended eating up somewhere along the sidewalk ulit.

bayang-bayang maha kecil (shadows of the tiniest kind) #9 by titarubi
the installation is comprised of ceramic busts of a child on wooden bases. modelled from the body of titarubi’s young daughter, the busts are inscribed with arabic texts and illuminated by light emanating from below. the busts are accompanied by two upturned hands that can be read as a state of surrender or rejection towards a fast growing and often forced islamisation and militant attitudes of indonesia’s religious fanatics. meanwhile, the arabic texts are a mixture of prayers and invocations, mostly for protection against undesirable spirits, a typical practice in traditional Javanese culture.

expense of spirit in a waste of shame by suzann victor
the installation consists of 4 to 6 long sets of light bulbs; each set has 12 lights paired with 12 elliptical mirrors. controlled by baby rocker motors, the bulbs descend towards the mirrors, producing a chorus of rhythmic, ‘clanging’ sounds every time the bulbs hit the mirrors. like doomed lovers, the bulbs and mirrors appear locked in a never-ending cycle of arrival and departure, and each narcissistic light dives to catch its reflection, only to separate after a fleeting moment’s contact.
